NEMA 6 enclosures & junction boxes are designed for temporary water submersion according the NEMA Rating system. And for some applications waterproof solution might be acceptable. The NEMA 6P rating is similar to the IP67 rating for temporary. There some similarities and diffences between NEMA 6 and the IP67 ratings. Nemaco offers type 6 enclosures series in electrostatic powder coated steel and powder coated aluminum material as an option for projects requiring lightweight waterproof solutions. Nemaco’s aluminum waterproof enclosures provide great conductive heat transfer characteristics and good corrosion resistance protection from humid air, water wash-down & full water submersion than standard powder coated steel NEMA 6 enclosures. NEMA 6 enclosures are equivalent relationship to IP67 enclosures. IP is the abbreviation for Ingress Protection that commonly used in Europe and other parts of the world.

The Type 6 rating series is considered as a waterproof box that gives protection against the entry of water during occasional temporary submersion, outdoor protection from rain, ice formation, foreign substances and windblown dust (circulating dust and settling airborne). Also, Indoor protection from falling dirt, incidental contact and dripping water from pipes. However, it is required to provide limited corrosion protection per NEMA standards. NEMA 6 are generally rated for occasional submersion for a limited duration.
NEMA Type 6 per NEMA 250 Standard
NEMA 6 boxes are constructed and can be used for either indoor or outdoor locations and they provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (hose directed water and the entry of water during occasional temporary submersion at a limited depth); and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure. However, Type 6 provides only limited protection against corrosion.

Protective Coatings & Materials
Typically, NEMA type 6 enclosures and boxes are fabricated from carbon steel. Since carbon steel will rust from moisture in the air or direct contact from water, protective coating must be applied to prevent or reduce surface corrosion. Powder coating can be electro-statically sprayed onto a clean and dry carbon steel enclosure. After the coating is applied then the enclosure can be baked at 400 °F whereby the coating will melt and adhere to the metal surface. After the metal is cool from the powder coat oven, the enclosure is ready to be assembled and packaged for shipping. Sometimes spray wet paint or dipped galvanized coating can be applied as alternate coating solutions.

NEMA 6 Enclosure Product Summary
Nemaco offers NEMA 6 Enclosures in powder coated carbon steel. All NEMA 6P Enclosures in stainless steel (304/316L) and powder coated aluminum are by definition automatically meet the NEMA 6 Enclosure category requirements. Customers can request the upgrade to powder coated aluminum material as an option. Aluminum alloys offer lower weight, good conductive heat transfer properties, and more general corrosion resistance from humid air, water wash-down & full water submersion than powder coated steel.
