ELECTRICAL ENCLOSURES FOR Sports Stadiums & Sound Systems
Johhn McTiernen once said, “Entertainment is in the presentation.” And Walt Disney once said that “It’s no secret that we were sticking about every nickel we had on the chance that people would really be interested in something totally new and unique in the field of entertainment.” Entertainment is probably one of the largest money-makers and motivators for our modern society. We have actors, athletes, and singers who seek to use their talents in entertainment to entertain us. But just as Walt Disney knew, it can be very expensive.
Protect your electrical equipment
Electrical equipment plays a huge role in both modern sporting events and concerts. It requires hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars for just one event. There are lights, speakers, screens, amplifiers, generators, and so many more pieces of equipment that must be taken care of and protected. Any high-end event, even the low-end ones, will require an exorbitant amount of equipment. Of course, though the lighting and sound systems are two separate systems they work together to give us the once in a lifetime experiences we get when going to professional sports games and enjoying concerts. For us to experience such wonderful moments, whether it’s listening to our favorite band, watching our team as they crush another team under the stadium lights requires that everything runs perfectly in whatever conditions and be protected from all elements whether they be from nature or man.
Sound systems and light systems both have many major components. Each one can be broken down into a few things. They both need power, a delivery system, the actual hardware, and finally a control for everything. Each of these systems through different equipment. Most venues tie directly into the power grid, but depending on the area it might need to be tied into by generators to supply power. This is where you get your power from the equipment used typically draws a lot of power. So as there will be lines, junction boxes, control boxes. And so much more. In addition to all of this, there will have to be racks and racks of control boards, switchboards, mics, lines, speakers and so much more.
The power is typically run to the lights or amplifiers which then runs to the speakers. There are several different types of lights. Most modern lights use LED because they require less power, are smart, and typically have few maintenance issues in general. There are numerous other types of lights but Halogens are likely the most common as they offer much more power but at a much smaller size. They are also VERY power intensive and run hot. All of these areas must be protected. The best way to do this is to purchase the boxes that are created specifically to protect them. Whether you need lights protected from the elements including wind, water, dust, or even human elements that might try to tamper with the system. You want to make sure you have the best quality protection that you can get. You’re going to want control cabinets that will protect the dimmer racks and other areas from. They come in many different types including stainless steel which will not corrode.
Sound systems work similarly to light systems and have many different working parts. Amps and soundboards are integral pieces of equipment that must be protected at all costs. Contrary to popular belief, the speakers are usually the cheaper part of a sound system. The good news is that all of these extremely expensive pieces of equipment are generally small enough to be put into an enclosure such as a switchgear cabinet. Switchgear cabinets are designed to house things like amplifiers and dimmer racks. They are typically heavy duty to protect from human or animal tampering and will be made of a heavy-duty metal that won’t be easy to break through. There are a variety of different choices.
Many standards of electrical enclosures
The cabinets come in many different materials. Though the most common are wall mounted, there are also floor mounted. They have different ratings to distinguish between what protections are necessary. In the United States, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association developed the NEMA rating for classifying an enclosure’s level of protection from those environmental elements. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) http://www.iec.ch/index.htm has developed an alternative rating system, the IP standard, which stands for Ingress Protection. After all, a cabinet indoors will likely not need water protection, but will more than likely need to be protected from dust. The materials can be from alloys, steel, stainless steel, plastic, and normal metals. There are conductive and nonconductive cabinets It is very important to know what is needed as electrical interference can be a major problem when you are dealing with sound systems. You need to make sure all the power is “clean.” This means that there are no shorts or unaccounted for grounds. That everything is in the proper place. This is why you will sometimes need cabinets made from non-conductive materials.
One of the most common problems you encounter with the cabinets is the necessity of protecting it from human tampering. After all, the elements won’t actively try to break or steal the very vital equipment from inside the cabinet. Because of this, it is important that the protective cabinets are able to prevent humans from breaking into it and stealing or breaking the valuable contents inside. Make sure when you check the rating, and that it can be locked so as to be protected from human tampering. Security must be your top priority when dealing with such valuable equipment.
Planning ahead is necessary to protect the investment of sound and lighting equipment. High dollar equipment is what you will find at any type of sporting event or live to show such as a concert. Good quality equipment is expensive but is needed when you are paying for the entertainment. Entertainment is the one great release we all have in common. We love to get together and watch our team win under stadium lights. Sometimes it’s the Friday night lights. Listening to your first rock concert or watching a theatre show, all of this equipment is vital to making sure that we are able to enjoy ourselves. Because of the value of entertainment and its ability to bring us together. To find common ground and allow very different people the opportunity to find something that they can come together over. It is vital that we protect the things that make entertainment possible. Every piece is important and valuable. The control cabinets, switchgear cabinets, the amplifiers, then the speakers, lights, boards, wires, and everything else all come together to make what is one huge show. And that is one of the many things that offer joy and value to people’s lives.
