TYPE 6P DEFINITION PER NEMA 250 STANDARD

Definition: Type 6P Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against access to hazardous parts; to provide a degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid foreign objects (falling dirt); to provide a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water (hose directed water and the entry of water during prolonged submersion at a limited depth); that provides an additional level of protection against corrosion and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.  

 

General Notes: NEMA 6P Enclosures, of course, can be used for submersible application for both indoor and outdoor environments or any water wash-down applications.

MATERIALS & PROTECTIVE COATINGS

STAINLESS STEEL

Typically, Type 6P enclosures are fabricated from stainless steel that provides corrosion resistance and material strength It is better to use premium grades of stainless steel (304, 316 and 316L) grades of stainless steel for waterproof submersible enclosures.  Premium grades of stainless steel contain more chrome and nickel elements for corrosion resistance. Generally, more chrome and nickel content added to stainless steel alloys, therefore, the stainless alloys have more corrosion resistance. Since the premium grades of stainless, reduce corrosion and surface oxidation, therefore it is uncommon for powder coat to be applied to stainless steel. Call NEMACO™ for more information about (304, 316, 316L gradesstainless steel NEMA / Type 6P enclosures and stainless steel passivation.

Aluminum alloys

Aluminum alloys (including 5052, 6061 and cast material grades) can be used for some Type 6P enclosures applications.  Many aluminum alloys have fairly good corrosion resistance. To improve corrosion resistance for aluminum alloy enclosures, the enclosures must have a protective coating applied. fiberglass reinforce plastics (frp / grp)

For some applications, fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP / GRP) can be considered and used for Type 6P since FRP glass and resin materials do not rust or corrode. But the enclosures should be designed with heavier (thick) walls for most applications.   Call NEMACO™ for more information FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) steel NEMA / Type 6P enclosures.

BRASS, COPPER & BRONZE ALLOYS

Other materials (for example, brass, copper, bronze alloys) might be used for Type 6P applications but it is not common for most industrial applications due to cost and materials not generally available. Brass, copper and bronze alloys can be using fittings and adapters.
